Why Spring Water Hydrates Differently
Purified water. Distilled water. Alkaline water. Electrolytes added. Choosing water should be simple, so why are there so many options? Not all water is created equal and it’s important to know what you’re buying so you can hydrate appropriately.
Let’s break it down while trying to keep it real simple ⬇️:
💧Purified Water
Purified water is filtered or processed to remove impurities. Wonderful - but it also means removing a lot of the naturally occurring minerals that will help rehydrate you. Tap water is generally purified water that has then had things added back into it. Think fluoride (most town tap waters) or chlorine.
💧Distilled Water
Distilled water is a type of purified water, but has as much as 99.9% of naturally occurring minerals removed including magnesium and calcium, which are great sources of electrolytes to rehydrate. Ever accidentally filled your espresso machine with distilled water and it won’t work? Is this a very niche coffee snob question? Yes, yes it is. But even your espresso machine won’t work on distilled water because it requires the minerals in spring water (or even found in tap water) to function appropriately. Wild.
🧂Alkaline Water (+ Electrolytes Added)
I’m going to be blunt here ➡️ I think of this water as the white bread of the water world. Take tap water- companies purify the heck out of it, and then add the good stuff back in, much like we did with bread and flour. Flour has naturally occurring vitamins, mineral, and fiber, but we purified the flour to be white and pretty. Then when we realized we had removed all the stuff that was good for us, companies added vitamins and minerals back in and advertise it. The water marketed as “Alkaline” or “Added Electrolytes for Taste” is the exact same game. It’s all about marketing, folks.
🌱Spring Water
Ahh yes, we’ve made it to the good stuff. The reason Chug Water was started was to offer a sustainable solution with the quality water we knew we had right here in Vermont. Nothing added, nothing removed, just pure clean Vermont spring water. Spring water as defined by the FDA is “derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the surface.” Spring water is naturally filtered underground, and ours comes out naturally pH balanced by Mother Nature herself at 7.0-7.2. Because of the natural filtration process spring water is often richer in vitamins and minerals than other water options. While we lightly pasteurize our water after canning to reduce risk of any contamination, Chug Water is an unprocessed spring water company.
So how do we make sure our water is so clean and safe for consumption? Never fear - not only is every single batch of canned water sent off for testing and reported to the state of Vermont, but the family-owned spring we work with also has consistent monitoring standards they need to report to stay within good standing.
Long story short, when you grab a can of Chug Water you can rehydrate naturally with minerals including calcium, potassium, and magnesium while also choosing a more sustainable option to traditional single-use plastic water bottles. So you can feel good, and #chugresponsibly .
